If you are, here's a simple way to get there...
1. Go to church
2. Be really good
3. Treat people like you would like to be treated
4. Do good works
5. Pray
6. Be baptized
7. Believe that because you do these "religious" things, you will go to Heaven.
You see, the Lord Jesus Christ told a story about two men: a Jewish religious leader called a Pharisee, and a dishonest tax collector called a publican. Both went to the Temple to pray. Jesus said,
“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.” Luke 18:11, 12
The Pharisee was a very religious man, but Jesus said that He was praying "with himself." God did not even listen to his self-righteous prayer.
Jesus went on to say,
“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Luke 18:13
The publican had no problem admitting that he was a sinner and asking for God's mercy.
Jesus said,
“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Luke 18:14
Our churches have plenty of self-righteous hypocrites like the Pharisee. Jesus taught that the sinful publican, not the self-righteous Pharisee, went to his house forgiven. Actually, Jesus said that he went home "justfied." In the Bible, justification is more than mere forgiveness.
Let's suppose that a man who is dressed in filthy, worn-out clothes, and who hasn't had a bath in weeks, is invited to a kind person's home to clean up. His dirty, old clothes are thrown away and he takes a bath until he is sparkling clean. He then leaves the house, clean as can be, without any clothes! That is forgiveness. Justification, though, is when the man takes a bath, is washed perfectly clean, and is given a brand new suit of clothes to wear. When God saves us, He doesn't just take our sins away. He gives us the righteousness of Jesus Christ! When God looks at us, clothed in Christ's righteousness, He declares us to be innocent of sin and righteous in His eyes. This is justification.
God is not an evil tyrant who enjoys sending people to Hell. God is a loving God who wants to see all people saved from their sins and to come to know Jesus Christ as Saviour.
“Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:4
If you are interested in going to Hell, please understand that God does not send people to Hell. We choose to go to Hell by rejecting Jesus Christ. God does not force anyone to sin, nor does He force anyone to believe in Jesus Christ and be forgiven. God's will is that all be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, but that doesn't mean that all will be. That would mean that God forced us to accept Jesus Christ, and God will not do that. Salvation is a choice.
