Did Jesus believe in Hell?

Jesus Christ not only believed in Hell, He preached on it more than He did on the subject of Heaven. It is often thought that it is unloving to preach on Hell. That is like saying that it would be unloving to warn someone who was about to drink a glass of poison, thinking that it was water, that there was poison in the glass! It is absolutely loving to tell people about the reality of Hell and that they do not have to go there.

Here are some examples of Jesus' preaching on Hell:

“And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.” Mark 9:43-49

“But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.” Matthew 5:22

“Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Matthew 23:33

“But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” Luke 12:5

“As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:40-42

Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” Luke 16:19-31

Does God send people to Hell who have never had a chance to hear about Jesus Christ?

Answer: No.

The Bible teaches that God is just and holy.

“Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.” Leviticus 19:2

“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3

“Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.” Isaiah 45:21

A holy and just God would never send people to Hell without giving them a chance to be saved. A holy and just God must also judge sin; but the fact is, sin has already been judged by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. If we do not believe the good news of Jesus Christ and receive Him as Saviour, then we are choosing to go to Hell. It is like this: Let's suppose that you are condemned to go to jail for breaking the law. A pardon is issued so that you do not have to serve any time in jail. You refuse to believe that the pardon has really been issued, so you reject the pardon and go to jail anyway. God has pardoned us from Hell because Jesus Christ died for our sins on the cross. When we refuse to believe that, we are choosing to go to a place that we do not have to go to. God is completely fair in this. Everyone has a chance to be saved. Even people in far away lands who have never seen a Christian preacher or heard the good news of Jesus Christ have an opportunity to be saved. Notice the following things:

1. In order to be saved, people must hear the gospel.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16

The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. It is the good news of how He died for our sins, was buried and arose from the dead. No one can be saved without hearing and believing it.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” Romans 10:13, 14

2. God commands His church to preach the gospel to every person on earth.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15

3. If a person does not know about the gospel, then He can still know about God.

“For the invisible things of him (God) from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, (us) even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Romans 1:20

Man can know about God's eternal power and Godhead (rule) without hearing the gospel. These truths are clearly seen by God's creation.

4. God gives two witnesses of His existence to mankind: Creation and Conscience.

God's creation declares that there is a God.

“ The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” Psalms 19:1

People that do not have the Bible still know right from wrong because they have a conscience. They know that they have sinned and need to seek God's forgiveness.

“For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” Romans 2:14-16

5. If a person, from creation and conscience, seeks to know more about God, God will reveal Himself to that person.

“And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:” Acts 17:26, 27

“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:” Isaiah 55:6

6. God will eventually send someone to preach the gospel to a person who seeks Him, so that he or she can know how to be saved.

“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.” Acts 10:34, 35

The Apostle Peter, in the verse above, says that people who truly seek God are accepted by God. This does not mean that they have heard the gospel and are saved. It just means that God has accepted them, and will send someone to preach the gospel to them. Peter says this when he goes to see a man named Cornelius who is not saved. Below is Cornelius' testimony.

“And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.” Acts 10:30-32

Because Cornelius truly sought to know God, God sent Simon Peter to his house to preach the Gospel. The Bible tells us that Cornelius believed in Christ as Saviour along with everyone in his house after Peter preached.

Can you prove that there is a Heaven?

No, I cannot prove that there is a heaven. Since we cannot see heaven, it is something that must be accepted by faith. Most people believe that there is some kind of a heaven to go to after death. If you do not believe in heaven, do you ever wish that there was such a place? Do you ever wish that, after you die, you could spend eternity in a place where you would be happy, truly loved, and completely satisfied? Do you ever wish that you could see loved ones again who have passed away, and have the assurance that they are in a better place? Or, do you believe that it all ends at death; that you will never see your loved ones again and that this life, full of pain, suffering and sickness, is all that there is? If you believe that, then you cannot possibly believe that there is a God. How could God create human beings to live on this earth, many with a life of sorrow, suffering and hopelessness and then have it all end in a grave somewhere? Because it makes no logical sense to believe that there is no God , then it also makes no sense to believe that there is no heaven.

The Bible says, “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14) Wouldn’t it be a terrible thing to sorrow with no hope of ever seeing our loved ones again after death? Many people do not have any hope at all. The Bible tells us that hope comes through the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus believed in heaven and taught about it. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:1-3)

Heaven is a matter of faith and also, some logic. Faith tells me to believe Jesus when he says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Logic tells me that there is a God and that God is good. A good God cannot possibly leave millions of people to live their lives in an aimless and hopeless existence without giving them some way to spend eternity in real peace and happiness

Years ago, this audio clip started circulating on the internet. It is included in several YouTube videos and on various websites. It is a fake. We posted it here because we think it is an interesting bit of urban legend. However, the proof that Hell exists is not some story about Siberian scientists digging a hole into the earth, dropping a microphone into temperatures hot enough to melt it, and then recording the supposed screams of the damned.

We do not believe that the teenagers, college students and other folks who visit our site (against our advice, I might add) are stupid or gullible. We try to present evidence that will give our guests enough information to determine: 1. Is the Bible reliable? 2. Does the Bible teach that there is a Hell? 3. Can I know that I will go to Heaven when I die and not to Hell?
