The Bible says, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;” (1 Corinthians 15:3) Again, the Bible says, “But God commendeth (showed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) The word of God teaches that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.

The cross was a brutal form of capital punishment that was widely used for a brief period of time in history. Jesus lived during this time, and suffered and died on the cross. Centuries before the cross was invented, the Bible prophesied that Jesus would be crucified. “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.” (Psalm 22:16)

Jesus Christ died on the cross after enduring hours of torture. The Bible teaches that this violent death payed the price for the sins of the world. Sin must be punished by God. Instead of making us die for our sins, God died for them on the cross. This was a choice that Jesus Christ made because He loved us. Now, we have a choice. We can accept the payment that Jesus made for our sins and go to Heaven when we die. Or, we can reject Jesus' payment, and pay for our own sins. “...It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27) Jesus Christ was judged for you so that you would not have to be judged. How can Jesus be both God's Son and God at the same time?

Jesus can be both the Son of God and God because God is a Trinity.

Also, when we think of God the Father, we cannot think of Him like a king whose son, though royalty, is not the king. Jesus is actually spoken of in the Bible as both a prince and King, both as the Son of God and as God.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:16

The Lord Jesus Christ is both Prince and King. He is both Son of God and God. The verse that we quoted above from the prophet Isaiah even says that He is "...The mighty God, The everlasting Father..."

No wonder Jesus said,

“I and my Father are one.” John 10:30

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.” John 14:6-11

Jesus Christ cannot be the Son of God and not be God. Jesus even said that those who had not seen Him, but believed He was God would be blessed.

“And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20:26-29

Yes, absolutely. Here are some examples:

1. Jesus stated that those who believed He was God would be blessed:

2. Jesus used the Old Testament, "I Am" title for God to refer to Himself:

“Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:” John 18:4-8

There are two interesting things about this passage:

1. The Jewish leaders would have recognized that He was using the "I Am" name of God for Himself. This experience was so powerful that the Bible says, "As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground."

2. The word "he" is not found in the original Greek language in which the New Testament was written. It was added to our English translation for clarity. But, the passage literally reads, "Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am...As soon then as he had said unto them, I am, they went backward and fell to the ground."

Jesus also said,

“...I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

“...I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” John 10:9

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5

3. When people confessed their belief that Jesus was Deity, He never told them any differently.

To accept and even encourage people to believe that you are God when you are not would be deceptive, and even blasphemous. Notice how Jesus responded to these confessions of faith in Him:

“The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, (a Jewish word for Master or Teacher) thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” (Son of man is another title of Jesus Christ) John 1:43-51

“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 16:16, 17

“And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.” Matthew 26:62-66

(This is a bit different because here, Jesus is on trial for claiming to be God. When the high priest of the Jewish religion commands Him to confess whether or not He is indeed Christ the Son of God, Jesus does not deny the charge but rather encourages it. The Jews then decide to sentence Him to death for blasphemy because He is clearly claiming to be Deity.)

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.” John 11:25-27

4. Jesus claimed to be able to do things that only God can do.

For instance, He claimed to be able to give eternal life with God to all who would believe in Him for it:

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John 11:25, 26

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

He also claimed to be able to forgive sins:

“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.” Mark 2:5-12

Jesus clearly claimed to be God. Anyone who reads the Bible and denies that fact is deliberately ignoring clear statements of Scripture. We have listed just a few here. Study the Bible for yourself. There are many more.
