The Bible says, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;” (1 Corinthians 15:3) Again, the Bible says, “But God commendeth (showed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) The word of God teaches that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.
The cross was a brutal form of capital punishment that was widely used for a brief period of time in history. Jesus lived during this time, and suffered and died on the cross. Centuries before the cross was invented, the Bible prophesied that Jesus would be crucified. “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.” (Psalm 22:16)
The following illustrations show the approximate size of the spikes compared to a human hand and the place where the spikes would have been driven.

A spike was driven into each hand, and one into the feet of the crucifixion victim. Here is a detailed scientific account of Christ's crucifixion.
Jesus Christ died on the cross after enduring hours of torture. The Bible teaches that this violent death payed the price for the sins of the world. Sin must be punished by God. Instead of making us die for our sins, God died for them on the cross. This was a choice that Jesus Christ made because He loved us. Now, we have a choice. We can accept the payment that Jesus made for our sins and go to Heaven when we die. Or, we can reject Jesus' payment, and pay for our own sins. “...It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27) Jesus Christ was judged for you so that you would not have to be judged.
